Lucero at Fitzgerald’s Houston, Texas March 12, 2012

Hot, sweaty, and drunk. That pretty much describes the crowd that was at Fitzgerald’s on Monday, March 13. They were all there to watch Dinosaur Feathers, Lucero, and Built To Spill. Me and my companions, my younger brother and two cousins, on the other hand had come to watch Lucero.

Fitzgerald’s in Houston on White Oak Drive, looks like a two-story green with white trip house and a house long balcony in fornt. After a brief panic we made it inside of the sold out venue. Fitz is a two stage venue, one stage down stairs and one upstairs. I was going up stairs, as I should the door man my ticket he directed me right to hallway at the end were stairs. That lead to us up to the stage. Walking in the room was packed while Dinosaur Feathers played on stage. To the right end of the room was the stage. Immediately to my left was the bar, behind a small wall that was used to support a balcony above. On both end of the bar were doors that would lead to balcony outside and next the were stair for the indoor balcony. We headed up to indoor balcony were and checked out merchandise stand. After looking around and buy some vinyl albums we headed back down, and waited for the show to start.

The crowd at Fitz that night was pretty diverse. People from out of town had come to watch these bands play. After a short wait Lucero had gathered on stage looking like any southern country/rock band. Blue jeans, sleeveless shirts, trucker hats, and facial hair. It’s hard to label them to a specific genre when you listen to all their albums, slowly developing from a country sound to something completely different. When I say different I don’t mean they went pop or hard rock, its more southern rock with a Memphis kick. As soon as they kicked off their set the crows was singing along and holding their drinks high. They played all the fan favorites and some off “Women and Work” their new album. It was a great if you were new to Lucero you got the whole package of songs from past albums, if you were a long time fan like myself you were surely drunk singing along. “Last Night in Town” was a fan favorite everyone that could drink had one in their hands raised high and shouting along. The band was enjoying themselves so was the crowd. After a few songs Ben Nichols, lead singer and guitarist, thanked the crowd and promised a fan girl next they were in town he’d play her requests. Lucero finished up their set with and then made way for Built To Spill. After the show some of the band members came out to greet the fans, I was fortunate enough to meet Ben and Brian Venable the lead guitarist. We departed shortly after to a local diner to top of a night of great beer and better music.
